About Zakat Al-Maal

What is Zakat Al-Maal?

Zakat Al-Maal is one of the five pillars of Islam and is an obligatory form of charity for Muslims who possess wealth above a certain threshold (Nisab).

Understanding Zakat

Zakat is calculated at 2.5% of your net wealth (assets minus liabilities) if it reaches or exceeds the Nisab threshold. The Nisab is based on the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver.

Who Must Pay Zakat?

Zakat is obligatory for every adult Muslim who:

  • Possesses wealth equal to or exceeding the Nisab threshold
  • Has owned this wealth for a complete lunar year (Hawl)
  • Is of sound mind

What is Included in Zakat Calculation?

Your Zakatable assets include:

  • Cash and savings in bank accounts
  • Gold and silver (jewelry, coins, bars)
  • Investments (stocks, bonds, mutual funds)
  • Business inventory and assets
  • Rental income from properties
  • Other valuable assets

Liabilities such as debts due within the year are deducted from your total assets.

How to Calculate Your Zakat

Use our online Zakat calculator to easily determine your Zakat obligation. Simply enter your assets and liabilities, and the calculator will determine if you meet the Nisab threshold and calculate your Zakat amount.

When to Pay Zakat

Zakat should be paid once a year after a complete lunar year has passed since you reached the Nisab threshold. Many Muslims choose to pay during the holy month of Ramadan.
